Por medio de un enfoque de larga duraci\u00f3n, el desarrollo del circo es estudiado a trav\u00e9s de su contextualizaci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica en tres partes: una primera corresponde a los a\u00f1os del reinado de fernando vii; despu\u00e9s se centra en el periodo isabelino para concluir con la muerte de alfonso xii, y la consolidaci\u00f3n de la restauraci\u00f3n.     la evoluci\u00f3n del circo y otros espect\u00e1culos en Madrid sirve de hilo conductor para analizar a la sociedad madrile\u00f1a en sus formas de concebir y realizar formas de entretenimiento. As\u00ed, se puede observar un proceso evolutivo que va de las exhibiciones de n\u00fameros en ferias o fiestas propios de las sociedades agrarias y del antiguo r\u00e9gimen, para alcanzar formas modernas sobre todo a partir del circo:  con todo un sistema de programas, publicidad -en carteles y prensa- y espacios arquitect\u00f3nicos dispuestos para recibir a p\u00fablicos urbanos cada vez m\u00e1s numerosos. La evoluci\u00f3n de las diversiones queda plasmada en los reglamentos que norman los permisos, vigilan las medidas de seguridad, determinan los pagos de impuestos.     a lo largo de la tesis, el concepto de intermediario cultura sirve para entender al circo como una empresa moderna del espect\u00e1culo que recupera formas antiguas del espect\u00e1culo; pero tambi\u00e9n como un receptor de artistas y de animales que presentan nuevos ejercicios o aparatos de reciente invenci\u00f3n como armas de fuego o ciclos. Asimismo, el circo se convierte en un espacio que potencia las transferencias culturales entre diversos espect\u00e1culos como son los toros, la zarzuela o los
