No obstante, la mayor\u00eda de las c\u00e9lulas que forman el cuerpo humano ejercen o est\u00e1n a fuerzas mec\u00e1nicas. Las c\u00e9lulas musculares ejercen fuerzas al contraerse las c\u00e9lulas endoteliales vasculares est\u00e1n sometidas a fuerzas de cizalla debidas a la corriente sangu\u00ednea y las c\u00e9lulas pulmonares soportan deformaciones c\u00edclicas debidas a la respiraci\u00f3n espont\u00e1nea. As\u00ed, las fuerzas mec\u00e1nicas est\u00e1n presentes en casi todos los tipos celulares y parece razonable que jueguen un papel importante en la determinaci\u00f3n de su composici\u00f3n, estructura y funci\u00f3n.  el reciente desarrollo de t\u00e9cnicas dise\u00f1adas para manipular c\u00e9lulas y mol\u00e9culas con resoluci\u00f3n nanom\u00e9trica y para medir y aplicar fuerzas en el rango del pico newton ha hecho surgir una nueva disciplina cient\u00edfica: la mec\u00e1nica celular.  el continuo aumento de trabajo que relacionan las propiedades mec\u00e1nicas de c\u00e9lulas con su funci\u00f3n muestra que la mec\u00e1nica es tan importante como la bioqu\u00edmica a nivel celular. A pesar del desarrollo de las nanotecnolog\u00edas, t\u00e9cnicas como la microscopia de fuerza at\u00f3mica (afm, del ingl\u00e9s), extendida en diversos campos de investigaci\u00f3n, tienen importantes inconvenientes a la hora de estudiar sistemas biol\u00f3gicos, tanto desde el punto de vista instrumental, como desde el metodol\u00f3gico. El objetivo principal de la tesis fue la mejora y aplicaci\u00f3n del microscopio de fuerza at\u00f3mica para la medida de las propiedades viscoel\u00e1sticas y de adhesi\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas vivas, poniendo especial inter\u00e9s en la geometr\u00eda de la punta.  los estudios presentados aqu\u00ed son parte del trabajo realizado en la unidad de biof\u00edsica y bioingenier\u00eda de la facultad de medicina de la universidad de barcelona.
