Dichos receptores reconocen de forma espec\u00edfica el neurotransmisor acetilcolina, realizando funciones en sistema nervioso central relacionadas con control motor, regulaci\u00f3n de la temperatura corporal y aprendizaje y memoria. durante el proceso de envejecimiento se van a producir una serie de modificaciones en enc\u00e9falo como la p\u00e9rdida de funcionalidad de las conexiones neurales, disminuci\u00f3n del flujo sangu\u00edneo, modificaciones en n\u00famero de receptores de distintos sistemas de neurotransmisi\u00f3n, etc. Con respecto al sistema colin\u00e9rgico, se ha postulado la denominada \u00abhip\u00f3tesis colin\u00e9rgica del envejecimiento\u00bb, en la cual indica como la p\u00e9rdida de funci\u00f3n colin\u00e9rgica que se produce en sistema nervioso central contribuye al declive cognitivo asociado con la edad avanzada.El objetivo de este trabajo fue la caracterizaci\u00f3n del sistema muscar\u00ednico, n\u00famero de receptores y funcionalidad de los mismos, en diferentes estructuras encef\u00e1licas del enc\u00e9falo de jerbo a lo largo del envejecimiento. los estudios de autorradiograf\u00eda de receptores y funcional en individuos de un amplio rango de edades, han mostrado diferencias significativas en algunas estructuras asociadas a la edad. en el giro dentado del hipocampo se observ\u00f3 en ensayos de autorradiograf\u00eda funcional un incremento de la fijaci\u00f3n basal, as\u00ed como un descenso en la respuesta funcional promovida por los agonistas muscar\u00ednicos oxotremorina y carbacol asociado a la edad. Esta disminuci\u00f3n en funcionalidad podr\u00eda estar relacionada con la p\u00e9rdida de inervaci\u00f3n septo-hipocampal que se produce durante el envejecimiento. en c\u00f3rtex cingular se observ\u00f3 un incremento en el n\u00famero de receptores de los subtipos m2 y m4 a lo largo del proceso de envejecimiento, mientras que en esta misma \u00e1rea cortical no se mostraron diferencias
