Su cultivo est\u00e1 concentrado en las regiones semi-\u00e1ridas, donde el agua disponible para riego es muy escasa y, generalmente, con niveles elevados de sales, lo que origina importantes reducciones en la producci\u00f3n.  conseguir cultivares m\u00e1s tolerantes a la sequ\u00eda y salinidad mediante mejora convencional ha sido un proceso relativamente lento por tratarse de caracteres bastante complejos. Dados los avances conseguidos en la transformaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica, un objetivo de gran inter\u00e9s en la actualidad es la identificaci\u00f3n de genes implicados en los principales procesos de la tolerancia. En este contexto, el grupo de trabajado del prof. Moreno (ibmcpupv-csic) conjuntamente con el nuestro (cebas) vienen desarrollando un ambicioso objetivo: la b\u00fasqueda de genes capaces de incrementar la tolerancia a la sequ\u00eda y salinidad en tomate. Dentro del mismo, el objetivo de este trabajo ha sido comprobar si la sobreexpresi\u00f3n individual de los genes tas14 y tsw12, que se inducen por estr\u00e9s osm\u00f3tico y salino en tomate, o bien la expresi\u00f3n conjunta de dos genes implicados en diferentes procesos (tsw12 x hal1), mejoran el nivel de tolerancia a la sequ\u00eda y\/o salinidad en tomate, as\u00ed como identificar los cambios fisiol\u00f3gicos inducidos por la expresi\u00f3n individual o conjunta de los genes. Para determinar si la sobreexpresi\u00f3n de los genes tas14 y tsw12 mejoran la tolerancia del tomate al est\u00e9s h\u00eddrico y salino, se han llevado da cabo diferentes experimentos a corto, medio y largo plazo, con l\u00edneas transg\u00e9nicas procedentes de la transformaci\u00f3n de dos cultivares de tomate con diferentes caracter\u00edsticas (p73 y uc82b). En conjunto, los resultados indican que los genes tas14 y tsw12 inducen un efecto positivo en la tolerancia al estr\u00e9s h\u00eddrico y salinidad.
