Esta tesis supone una contribucion a la determinacion del funcionamiento hidrogeologico de este sistema, en especial en lo que se refiere a dos aspectos: por una parte, la identificacion de modalidades, areas y volumenes de recarga y descarga.  por otra parte, el conocimiento de la calidad actual de las aguas, su evolucion en los ultimos a\u00f1os, y la identificacion de procesos hidrogeoquimicos. El acuifero de vitoria-gasteiz esta constituido por materiales de origen aluvial y fluvial. Se articula en tres sectores individualizados: sectores occidental, oriental y de dulantzi, todos ellos en general de funcionamiento libre.  son recargados por infiltracion eficaz de lluvia y retorno de riesgos 31 hm3\/a\u00f1o), escorrentia procedente de los bordes (10 hm3\/a\u00f1o), comportamiento influente de cursos superficiales (2 hm3\/a\u00f1o) y aportes subterraneos procedentes del karst de apodaka (unicamente en el sector occidental, 8 hm3\/a\u00f1o). La descarga se realiza a favor de la densa red de drenaje del acuifero (41 hm3\/a\u00f1o), mediante bombeos estivales (6 hm3\/a\u00f1o), y a favor de manantiales (4 hm3\/a\u00f1o). La capacidad de almacenamiento es de 41 hm3. Las practicas agricolas intensivas desarrolladas actualmente, y combinadas con la existencia de numerosos focos de contaminacion por aguas residuales, han conducido a una intensa contaminacion de las aguas subterraneas por compuestos nitrogenados. La existencia de factores que han agravado la situacion (procesos de recirculacion por retorno de riesgos, derivacion de rios a la entrada de la unidad cuaternaria, etc.) Han posibilitado que en la actualidad sea uno de los mas contaminados por nitratos de la peninsula iberica, con concentraciones medias que alcanzan los 150-200 mg\/1.
