Anteriormente se hab\u00eda observado que el al era capaz de inhibir la s\u00edntesis y la secreci\u00f3n de hormona paratiroidea (pth), si bien los mecanismos subyacentes se desconoc\u00edan. en la primera parte del estudio se utiliz\u00f3 un modelo animal de intoxicaci\u00f3n alum\u00ednica para demostrar que el metal, adem\u00e1s de inhibir la s\u00edntesis y secreci\u00f3n de pth, tambi\u00e9n inhibe la proliferaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas de la gl\u00e1ndula paratiroides. Estos resultados son similares a los que se hab\u00edan descrito para el calcio, principal regulador de la funci\u00f3n paratiroidea. el calcio ejerce sus acciones a trav\u00e9s del receptor-sensor de calcio (car), mientras que en el caso del al se desconoc\u00eda c\u00f3mo las c\u00e9lulas de la gl\u00e1ndula respond\u00edan al metal. Por ello, en la segunda parte del estudio se utilizaron c\u00e9lulas de ri\u00f1\u00f3n embrionario transfectadas con el car para demostrar que este receptor era el sistema por el que las gl\u00e1ndulas paratiroides respond\u00edan al al. Por ultimo, se estableci\u00f3 un modelo de cultivo de tejido paratiroideo in vitro para demostrar que la regulaci\u00f3n de la s\u00edntesis de pth mediada por al era un mecanismo post-transcripcional, al igual que ocurre con el calcio. En conjunto, los resultados demuestran por primera vez que las acciones del al sobre la funci\u00f3n paratiroidea tienen lugar a trav\u00e9s de un mecanismo similar al del calcio.
