Junto con el carduelis pinus pinus, estas especies ser\u00e1n definidas como un grupo monofil\u00e9tico estrechamente relacionado con la especie euroasi\u00e1tica c.Spinus. El gen del citocromo b mitocondrial ha sido secuenciado en estas especies y estudiando filogen\u00e9ticamente junto con los de la mayor\u00eda de especies de carduelis de todo el mundo. Los linajes que han dado lugar a las especies actuales de carduelis estudiadas parecen haber divergido inicialmente en el plioceno. El pleistoceno tambi\u00e9n habr\u00eda jugado un papel importante en la diversificaci\u00f3n de las actuales especies c.Pinus pinus, c.Pinus perplexus y c.Atr\u00edceps. La especie de las antillas c.Dominicensis muestra un origen en el plioceno dentro de este grupo de l\u00faganos americanos.     no se ha encontrado estructura geogr\u00e1fica en las secuencias de individuos de la especies c.Pinus pinus pertenecientes a distintas poblaciones localizadas en puntos extremos de su \u00e1rea de distribuci\u00f3n. La falta de estructura filogeofr\u00e1nfica encontrada en las secuencias de c.Pinus pinus podr\u00eda ser el resultados de una expansi\u00f3n a partir de un cuello de botella desde un refugio glacial. Las especies c.Atriceps y c.Pinus parecen ser las \u00faltimas en aparecer en norteam\u00e9rica. El patr\u00f3n filogeogr\u00e1fico del carduelis dominicensis es todav\u00eda poco claro, y su morfolog\u00eda es at\u00edpica dentro delos miembros de su radiaci\u00f3n, debido probablemente a la falta de ancestros ya desaparecidos, o a la evoluci\u00f3n convergente como consecuencia de su aislamiento en la regi\u00f3n monta\u00f1osa de la isla espa\u00f1ola. El estatus taxon\u00f3micos de las especies c.Pinus pinus c.Pinus perplexus y c.Atriceps, baado en caracteres fenot\u00edlicos, no se refleja en las filogenias de and mitocondnrial, probablemente a
