Las poblaciones generan mayores ingresos por animal pero tambi\u00e9n mayores gastos (jones et al., 1994). Por otro lado, el nivel productivo ha dejado de ser la primera causa de desecho, puesto que en la actualidad, las poblaciones holstein tienen altas producciones. Bascom y young (1998) atribuyen a la fertilidad la primera causa de desecho, con un 18% del desecho total; la segunda causa es un bajo nivel productivo (16%) y la tercera la mamitis (15%), mientras que los miembros y aplomos ocupan el noveno lugar con un 6% de animales desechados.  la selecci\u00f3n por fertilidad plantea varios problemas. Uno de ellos es el antagonismo existente entre producci\u00f3n y fertilidad. Esta oposici\u00f3n dificulta la mejora de la fertilidad puesto que hist\u00f3ricamente la producci\u00f3n ha tenido un gran peso en los \u00edndices de selecci\u00f3n por su relaci\u00f3n directa con la rentabilidad. Adem\u00e1s presenta heredabilidades mayores que la fertilidad, facilitando el progreso gen\u00e9tico. Otro inconveniente de la fertilidad recae en el tratamiento estad\u00edstico de los caracteres que la miden. Estos problemas estad\u00edsticos se basan en los datos censurados y\/o caracteres categ\u00f3ricos. en el primer caso se incluyen los registros de vacas que no se conocen completos o bien que nunca han obtenido gestaci\u00f3n y, por tanto, es necesario asumir sus valores. Por ejemplo, si una vaca es desechada tras 2 inseminaciones sin obtener pre\u00f1ez, sabemos que esa vaca habr\u00eda necesitado al menos tres inseminaciones para obtener gestaci\u00f3n (punto de censura = 2 inseminaciones), y que sus d\u00edas abiertos fueron superiores al intervalo entre el parto y la segunda inseminaci\u00f3n (punto de censura para d\u00edas abiertos = fecha de la segunda inseminaci\u00f3n).
