Constituye un elemento esencial en la dieta del ser humano y es materia prima en m\u00faltiples procesos industriales.     el gluc\u00f3geno a su vez, es la forma principal de almacenamiento de energ\u00eda en muchas especies bacterianas. Al igual que el almid\u00f3n, es un homopolisac\u00e1rido de mol\u00e9culas de glucosa.     tanto en bacterias como en plantas se ha aceptado tradicionalmente que la adpglucosa pirofosforilasas es el \u00fanico enzima capaz de producir el adpglucosa (adpg) necesario para la bios\u00edntesis del gluc\u00f3geno y del almid\u00f3n.  sin embargo, nuestro equipo ha acumulado evidencias sobre la existencia de otras fuentes importantes de adpg en plantas. Es por ello que en este trabajo me plante\u00e9 investigar la posible existencia de fuentes adicionales productoras de adpg en bacterias. Con este fin he caracterizado cepas de escherichia coli y salmonella enterica mutantes en el operon glgcap cuyos productos son los responsables de la s\u00edntesis de adpg, su utilizaci\u00f3n para la s\u00edntesis de gluc\u00f3geno y la degradaci\u00f3n de este poliglucano. Este trabajo, recogido en el cap\u00edtulo 1, presenta evidencias que demuestran que las enterobacterias poseen varias fuentes importantes de adpg.     teniendo en cuenta que el acumulo del gluc\u00f3geno bacteriano puede estar determinado no s\u00f3lo por la s\u00edntesis del adpg sino tambi\u00e9n por su hidr\u00f3lisis, proced\u00ed a caracterizar los aspectos reguladores de la adpglucosa pirofosfatasa (aspp) de escherichia coli. Estudios iniciales presentados en el cap\u00edtulo 2 demostrando que peque\u00f1os aumentos de esta actividad enzim\u00e1tica dan lugar a una reducci\u00f3n en el contenido de gluc\u00f3geno, indicando que, a menos que aspp est\u00e9 regulada, no se acumular\u00eda gluc\u00f3geno en la bacteria. Estudios posteriores demostraron que aspp est\u00e1 altamente regulada tanto por efectos como por macromolecular crowding y mecanismos de translocaci\u00f3n a membrana inducidos por
