En algunos de estos procesos, los niveles de ox\u00edgeno deben ser detectados y controlados incluso en el rango de las ppm. Aunque existen varios m\u00e9todos ya probados para la detecci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno en estos sistemas de control, la mayor\u00eda de ellos son costosos y complejos. Otros m\u00e9todos de detecci\u00f3n m\u00e1s accesible como los sensores lambda o las celdas electoqu\u00edmicas tambi\u00e9n presentan problemas: los primeros requieren de altas concentraciones de ox\u00edgeno, o de controles de temperatura bastante precisos para poder trabajar sin interferencias de otros gases los segundos pueden verse afectados por una prolongada exposici\u00f3n a gases \u00ab\u00e1cidos\u00bb como el di\u00f3xido de carbono y no se recomienda para uso continuo en atm\u00f3sferas con un contenido de mas del 25 % de dicho gas.  debido a muchas ventajas tales como su bajo costo, tama\u00f1o reducido y solidez, los sensores basados en semiconductores aparecen como una soluci\u00f3n para la detecci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno. Algunos autores han reportado la detecci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno a niveles ppm empleando este tipo de sensores. Sin embargo, la mayor\u00eda de ellos han sido desarrollados mediante tecnolog\u00eda de capa fina. En aplicaciones industriales, la tecnolog\u00eda m\u00e1s usada es la de capa gruesa, ya que estos sensores son m\u00e1s f\u00e1ciles de fabricar y de dopar que los sensores de capa fina. En los sensores de capa gruesa, la detecci\u00f3n de trazas de ox\u00edgeno es aun una tarea dif\u00edcil de alcanzar, siendo normalmente necesarias altas temperaturas (&gt; 700 \u00c2\u00bac) para lograrlo.  el mecanismo de detecci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno en los sensores basados en \u00f3xidos semiconductores esta basado en la fuerte dependencia de la conductividad el\u00e9ctrica de estos materiales a la presi\u00f3n parcial de ox\u00edgeno en el ambiente. el di\u00f3xido de titanio es el \u00f3xido semiconductor m\u00e1s ampliamente usado en la detecci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno.
