Los sistemas de transici\u00f3n limitrofes al sistema fluvial son zonas donde hay un continuo intercambio de materia y energ\u00eda con el canal fluvial. Se pueden identificar dos zonas de interfase rio-cuenca: a)una zona mas alta, donde el agua del fre\u00e1tico fluye gradualmente al r\u00edo (la zona de ribera), b)una zona adyacente al r\u00edo, donde hay un continuo intercambio de agua y solutos con el agua transportada por el rio (la zona hyporrheica). Este estudio se ha desarrollado en la riera major, un r\u00edo situado en el montseny que drena una cuenca silicica de 15.9 km2 caracterizada por un clima mediterraneo humedo. Las precipitaciones en esta cuenca oscilan entre 850 mm (1994) y 1660 mm(1996). La temperatura del agua del rio varian entre 2 y 25\u00c2\u00bac. El caudal del r\u00edo tiene un caudal basal de 30 1 s-1 (en verano) y 100 1 s-1(invierno), durante las crecidas el caudal puede superar los 800 1 s-1. La zona hyporheica es relativamente peque\u00f1a y est\u00e1 caracterizada por una alta tasa de intercambio de agua con el agua del r\u00edo. Durante el periodo autumno-invierno 1994-1995 largos tramos del bosque de ribera(alnus glutinosa) fueron cortados. La variabilidad estacional del flujo del carbono org\u00e1nico disuelo viene explicada a trav\u00e9s la combinaci\u00f3n de los procesos que ocurren en el fret\u00e1tico, en la zona hyporrehica y en la cuenca. En condiciones de caudal basal se ha estimado que el 62% del flujo total del doc viene del fre\u00e1tico y el restante 38% de la zona hyporheica. Por el otro lado durante las crecidas el input de doc proviene casi unicamente del rentado del suelo de la cuenca.
