La quitina es el polisacarido que presenta la mayor variacion cuantitativa entre levaduras e hifas de c. Albicans y nos propusimos conocer si la quitina tenia responsabilidad en la inmunomodulacion atribuida a c. Albicans.  administramos la quitina de este hongo en las dosis y cantidades encontradas durante las infecciones de este microorganismo. Observamos un efecto inmunomodulador, dependiente de dosis y especifico de la infeccion por c.  albicans con esta quitina. Dosis de 30 mg kg-1 protegen a los ratones frente a la infeccion por c. Albicans y esto por via i.P. Se correlaciona con la activacion de las respuestas de los macrofagos peritoneales del raton, pero no con la produccion de oxido nitrico ni de intermediarios reactivos de oxigeno por estas celulas. La dosis de 10 mg kg-1 de esta quitina disminuyo la resistencia de los ratones a una infeccion por c.  albicans. Esta dosis disminuyo la actividad candidacida de los macrofagos peritoneales y anulo la respuesta de estas celulas a la infeccion por c. Albicans casi por completo. Este efecto es especifico, ya que frente a otras infecciones la accion es diferente, aumenta la resistencia, caso a.
