Paz Martin Castro <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>El recurso a la utilizaci\u00f3n de distintos modos de transporte para el traslado de las mercancias hasta su lugar de destino no constituye un fenomeno reciente. Sin embargo, ha sido a partir de la segunda mitad de nuestro siglo cuando el transporte multimodal internacional de mercancias ha experimentado un espectacular desarrollo. El factor que de forma m\u00e1s decisiva ha contribuido a la difusi\u00f3n alcanzada por el transporte multimodal en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os ha constituido en la superaci\u00f3n de los principales obstaculos a los que desde su origenes se enfrentaba el traslado ejecutado mediante la combinaci\u00f3n de diferentes modos de transporte. En la superaci\u00f3n de tales obst\u00e1culos desempe\u00f1aron un papel muy destacado las innovaciones tecnologicas producidas en el sector del transporte referidas al fenomeno de la unificaci\u00f3n de cargas. La enorme influencia que tales innovaciones t\u00e9cnicas ejercieron sobre la evoluci\u00f3n y desarrollo del transporte combinado resulta claramente evidenciada si se tienen presente los principales inconvenientes a los que, hasta entonces, se enfrentaba cualquier operaci\u00f3n de traslado efectuada mediante la combinaci\u00f3n de una pluralidad de modos de transporte. Tales obstaculos hacian referencia, fundamentalmente a la concepcion fragmentaria que existia del contrato de transporte combinado y como consecuencia de ello, a la falta del tratamiento unitario de la que adolecia dicha figura tanto desde los puntos de vista tecnico y economico como juridico. En efecto, hasta hace solo unas decadas, el transporte multimodal no era concebido como un unico contrato sino como una sucesion de diversos transportes, cada uno de los cuales se hallaba sometdo a un regimen juridico distinto. en la actualidad, no se encuentra en vigor ninguna convenci\u00f3n internacional que permita someter una disciplina uniforme lo transportes internacionales combinados.
