La cuantificacion de la densidad volumetrica de depositos negros de plata mediante analisis de imagen automatizado, puede ser considerado como un indice realista para evaluar los niveles de metales en agua de mar. Este indice se ve menos afectado por variables bioticas y abioticas que las estimaciones tradicionales basadas en las concentraciones de metales en los tejidos blandos de moluscos. Sin embargo, algunas caracteristicas celulares, tales como el numero de basofilas en el epitelio de los tubulos digestivos y el numero de depositos negros contenido en lisosomas que han sido excretados a la luz de los tubulos digestivos, han de tenerse en cuenta para realizar una estimacion de la contaminacion metalica. Asi, el total de depositos de plata, que es facil y objetivamente cuantificado en secciones de tejido, es recomendado para evaluar los niveles de metales biodisponibles en habitats costeros y
