La metacognicion entendida como el conocimiento que posee el individuo sobre lo que conoce, sobre como conoce y el modo en que regula su propia accion cognoscente, se presenta como un elemento importante en la actual y futura investigacion educativa.  esta investigacion trata de hacer una aportacion experimental en esta linea.  mediante la aplicacion, durante un curso academico, de un programa de orientacion metacognitiva de la comprension lectora a varios grupos experimentales de 5 y 8 de egb, se ha analizado el progreso obtenido por ellos y se ha comparado dicho progreso con el obtenido por otros grupos similares no sometidos a la situacion experimental.  los resultados confirman las hipotesis planteadas indicando que la orientacion metacognitiva de la comprension lectora no solo mejora la comprension de textos escritos sino que mediante un efecto transferencial repercute significativamente en los resultados academicos en el area de las ciencias sociales y en el
