En estados de inmunosupresi\u00f3n o de baja inmunoestimulaci\u00f3n, la melatonina puede estimular la respuesta inmune, aumentando la producci\u00f3n de anticuerpos y la actividad citol\u00edtica a las c\u00e9lulas inmunes, como por ejemplo la capacidad citol\u00edtica de las c\u00e9lulas natural killer(nk) y la citotoxicidad celular dependientes de anticuerpos. Sin embargo, es poca la informaci\u00f3n existente acerca de los mecanismos de transdruci\u00f3n de se\u00f1al para melatonina en sistema inmune.  en esta tesis doctoral se ha realizado la caracterizaci\u00f3n de receptores para melatonina en macr\u00f3fagos peritoneales de rat\u00f3n, as\u00ed como el estudio de los mecanismos de transducci\u00f3n de se\u00f1al de los receptores de membrana para melatonina en linfocitos humanos y macr\u00f3fagos peritoneales de rat\u00f3n.  los linfocitos humanos presentan receptores de membrana de alta afinidad(kd=0,45 nm) por la melatonina. Estos receptores que est\u00e1n asociados a prote\u00ednas g y acoplados a mecanismos de transducci\u00f3n de se\u00f1al por segundos mensajeros, inhibiendo la producci\u00f3n de ampc(efecto mediado por prote\u00ednas gi) y estimulando la producci\u00f3n de dag. (Efecto mediado por prote\u00ednas gi\/o).  la uni\u00f3n de melatonina a los macr\u00f3fagos peritoniales de rat\u00f3n cumple todos los criterios de uni\u00f3n de un ligando a su receptor: fue dependiente de tiempo, temperatura y concentraci\u00f3n celular, estable, reversible, saturable y espec\u00edfica. Los macr\u00f3fagos presentan dos sitios de uni\u00f3n para melatonina, uno con alta afinidad(kd=0,58-0,71 nm) y baja capacidad de uni\u00f3n, y otro con baja afinidad(kd=2,2 um) y alta capacidad de uni\u00f3n. Los macr\u00f3fagos presentan receptores de membrana acoplados funcionalmente al sistema efector adenilil ciclasa, inhibiendo la producci\u00f3n de amp c\u00edclico a trav\u00e9s de prote\u00ednas g,
