Es uno de los cultivos m\u00e1s importantes del mundo. se estima que cada a\u00f1o esta especie reduce en un 50% su rendimiento m\u00e1ximo te\u00f3rico debido a plagas y enfermedades.  la finalidad de esta tesis ha sido transferir, integrar y expresar el gen itrl de cebada, que codifica el inhibidor de tripsina bti-cme, a celulas desdiferenciadas(callos) de cultivares indica y japonica de arroz y regenerar plantas completas de arroz a partir de celulas transformadas.  se han establecido sistemas de propagaci\u00f3n in vitro de plantas de arroz mediante embriog\u00e9nesis som\u00e1tica, y se han optimizado las condiciones de transferencia de genes mediante bombardeo de part\u00edculas. Se han dise\u00f1ado construcciones g\u00e9nicas que portan el gen itrl y genes selectivos que permiten unicamente el crecimiento de las c\u00e9lulas transformadas en medios selectivos.  utilizando como molde adn de arroz y como cebadores nucle\u00f3tidos deducidos de la secuencia del gen itrl de cebada, se ha amplificado mediante la t\u00e9cnica de pcr un fragmento de adn del tama\u00f1o esperado, pero no se ha detectado la correspondiente proteina en ninguno de los tejidos de arroz no-transg\u00e9nico analizados (semillas y hojas).  las plantas transformadas seleccionadas han sido analizadas molecular y bioqu\u00edmicamente.  se han obtenido 12 plantas transg\u00e9nicas de arros, 7 de la l\u00ednea ir58 de tipo indica y 5 del cultivar senia tipo jap\u00f3nica, que portaban el transg\u00e9n y expresaban la correspondiente proteina. Ensayos invitro de inhibici\u00f3n de tripsina han demostrado la funcionalidad de la proteina bti-cme en los arroces transg\u00e9nicos.
