El objetivo de esta tesis doctoral se centr\u00f3 en el estudio de los efectos del litio en la transmisi\u00f3n sin\u00e1ptica exitatoria del hipocampo.  el litio produce un aumento reversible y dosis dependiente de los potenciales excitatorios postsin\u00e1pticos y de las corrientes excitaorias postisin\u00e1pticas, debido a al contriubuci\u00f3n de dos factores:  1- un aumento de la excitabilidad axonal, calcio dependiente.  2- un aumento de la eficacita sin\u00e1ptica.  tras estudiar el coeficiente de variaci\u00f3n de las corrientes sin\u00e1pticas y la facilitaci\u00f3n por par de pulso, se ha llegado a la conclusi\u00f3n de que el efecto del litio sobre la eficacia sin\u00e1ptica se localiza en la membrana presin\u00e1ptica. Realizados estudios de fijaci\u00f3n de membrana en c\u00e9lula entera, se comprob\u00f3 que el litio produce un aumento de la duraci\u00f3n del potencial de acci\u00f3n son\u00e1tico, debido a una disminuci\u00f3n de su velocidad de repolariazci\u00f3n, principalmente.  como conlusi\u00f3n podemos afirmar que el efecto de litio sobre la eficacia sin\u00e1ptica se debe a un aumento de la probabilidad de liberaci\u00f3n de nuerotrasmisor, como consecuencia del aumento de duraci\u00f3n del potencial de acci\u00f3n, ya que este efecto, produce una mayor entrada de calcio en el terminal presin\u00e1ptico y una mayor concentraci\u00f3n final de calcio.
