Este gen, que ha sido dominado cayst, presenta una pauta abierta de lectura de 783 nucle\u00f3tidos que codifica una prote\u00edna, de 261 amino\u00e1cidos. El gen cayst se encuentra en una sola copia en el genoma de c. Albicans, pero se detectan dos transcritos de diferente tama\u00f1o. La expresi\u00f3n del mismo es mayor en condiciones de miceliaci\u00f3n. adem\u00e1s la expresi\u00f3n del gen cayst aumenta cuando se emplea prolina, una fuente de nitr\u00f3geno dificilmente asimilable.  la prote\u00edna es localizada en citosol, ribosomas y membranas, presentando una movilidad en gel sds-page de 37 kda. La secuencia aminoac\u00eddica presenta una elevada homolog\u00eda con numerosas prote\u00ednas ribosomales, entre las que se encuentran yst1p e yst2p de s. Cerevisiae,con un 70% de identidad. Tiene adem\u00e1s homolog\u00eda con prote\u00ednas receptoras de laminina.  los estudios de complementaci\u00f3n realizados en cepas de s. Cerevisiae mutantes en los genes yst demuestran que caystp tiene una funci\u00f3n similar a la de sus homol\u00f3gos. Adem\u00e1s la sobreexpresi\u00f3n de cayst en s. Cerevisiae y en c. Albicans produce un incremento en la filamentaci\u00f3n de las cepas en condiciones de ayuno de nitr\u00f3geno, mientras que la interrupci\u00f3n de un alelo del gen cayst produce un defecto en la filamentaci\u00f3n en las mismas condiciones.
