La galectina-3 es una lectina tipo s (soluble) con un peso molecular de 32 kda e indentifica en diferentes tipos celulares. en su estructura proteica nos encontramos con dos dominios el c-terminal (lectina) y n-terminal, \u00e9ste \u00faltimo con una secuencia de amino\u00e1cidos conservados y repetidos que le confieren su capacidad para formar d\u00edmeros. A galectina-3 se le han atribuido diferentes funciones tanto intracelulares (splicing del arnm, regulaci\u00f3n del crecimiento celular, inhibici\u00f3n de apoptosis) como extracelulares (adhesi\u00f3n a prote\u00ednas de la matriz extracelular, activaci\u00f3n y liberaci\u00f3n de mediadores). Debido a la interacci\u00f3n entre la galectina-3 y el receptor de alta afinidad para la ige as\u00ed como con la propia mol\u00e9cula de ige, dos prote\u00ednas muy importantes en las reacciones al\u00e9rgicas\/inflamatorias (reacciones del tipo th2), se pens\u00f3 que la galectina-3 podr\u00eda estar implicada en este tipo de patolog\u00edas. Los objetivos y resultados de este trabajo fueron los siguientes:  1. Estudiar el efecto de galectina-3 sobre las citoquinas del subtipo th2 (il-4 e il-5). Para abordar el primer objetivo se realizaron cultivos de diferentes tipos celularess en presencia o ausencia de galectina-3 y se analiz\u00f3 por rt-pcr los mensajeros de il-4 e il-5. Se demostr\u00f3 que la presencia de galectina-3 en el cultivo era capaz de inhibir espec\u00edficamente la transcripci\u00f3n del gen de la il-5, sin ning\u00fan efecto detectable sobre la il-4. Adem\u00e1s tambi\u00e9n se corroboran estos datos analizando la liberaci\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna il-5 al medio mediante elisa.  2. El segundo objetivo fue determinar el ligando de galectina-3 en la superficie celular responsable de la inhibici\u00f3n del gen de la il-5. Un buen candidato era el receptor de baja afinidad para la igg (fcrii o cd32).
