Desde el punto de vista patogen\u00e9tico se le puede considerar como un mosaico de factores de virulencia que interactuan cooprativamente, produciendo como consecuencia enfermedades graves entre las de destacan, neumon\u00eda y meningitis, acompa\u00f1adas o no de sepsis, as\u00ed como otitis media aguda y sinusitis. Del referido conjunto de factores de virulencia, neumolisina, la toxina tiol-activada producida por este microorganismo, se ha demostrado recientemente implicada como un importante factor de patogenicidad. Esta prote\u00edna est\u00e1 altamente conservada en todos los serotipos de neumococo, encontr\u00e1ndose en la pr\u00e1ctica totalidad de los mismos. En base al referido inter\u00e9s de la infecci\u00f3n neumoc\u00f3cica y de la neumolisina, y contando con un panel de anticuerpos monoclonales murinos altamente espec\u00edficos frente a la misma, se plante\u00f3 la posibilidad de realizar un proyecto de tesis doctoral para estudiar las \u00abaplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas de anticuerpos antineumolisina\u00bb.  los objetivos que nos hab\u00edamos marcado al inicio de este estudio habian sido,por una parte estudiar la utilidad diagn\u00f3stica de neumolisina como marcador antig\u00e9nico y\/o diagn\u00f3stico del neumococo; desarrollar un test elisa basado en la neumolisina para el diagn\u00f3stico de las infecciones neumoc\u00f3cicas; proceder a una estimaci\u00f3n directa de la cantidad de neumolisina producida por las diferentes cepas neumoc\u00f3cidas; an\u00e1lisis del reconocimiento de ep\u00edtopos en toxinas tiol-activadas por nuestros anticuerpos; y analizar el potencial terap\u00e9utico experimental de anticuerpos antineumolisina. Las conclusiones a todos estos estudios en base a los resultados obtenidos han sido: se ha puesto de manifiesto que la neumolisina es un marcador antig\u00e9nico que permite la identificaci\u00f3n
