Tienen gran importancia en avicultura y acuicultura para la pigmentaci\u00f3n de la carne del pollo, la yema del huevo y el m\u00fasculo del salm\u00f3n y la trucha salmonada. la mayor\u00eda de los pigmentos utilizados hoy en d\u00eda en la industria alimentaria se obtienen por s\u00edntesis qu\u00edmica, sin embargo las leyes restringen cada vez m\u00e1s este modo de obtenci\u00f3n debido a posibles riesgos t\u00f3xicos.  este trabajo consiste en la b\u00fasqueda de microorganismos productores de carotenoides que sean susceptibles de ser utilizados a nivel industrial.  los an\u00e1lisis por hplc revelaron la presencia de beta-caroteno en cuatro cepas de la levadura rhodosporidium estudiadas. determinadas caracter\u00edsticas de cultivo de la levadura rhodosporidium hacen que \u00e9ste pudiera ser rentable desde el punto de vista industrial. Asimismo se encontr\u00f3 presencia de astaxantina, beta-caroteno y 3-hidroxiequinenona en una colecci\u00f3n de halobacterias. la bacteria gordonia jacobaea, a la que inicialmente se llam\u00f3 cepa mv-1 fue aislada durante esta b\u00fasqueda de microorganismos productores de colonias pigmentadas. El estudio realizado a esta bacteria incluye las pruebas taxon\u00f3micas que llevaron a la descripci\u00f3n de la nueva especie (\u00edndice gc, pruebas bioqu\u00edmicas y secuenciaci\u00f3n del gen 16s rnar). Los estudios de hplc y espectrometr\u00eda de masas revelaron la existencia de grandes cantidades de cantaxantina en esta cepa. Tambi\u00e9n se obtuvieron mutantes de la cepa silvestre con ems y se llevaron a cabo estudios de pigmentaci\u00f3n de ejemplares de la trucha arco iris cuando se a\u00f1ad\u00eda al pienso de estos animales el extracto del mutante 26 de gordonia jacobaea.
