La astaxantina puede utilizarse para pigmentar otros peces y animales para incrementar su valor a\u00f1adido, adem\u00e1s este pigmento tiene tambi\u00e9n capacidad antitumoral.  haematococcus pluvalis es una microalga de agua dulce que se caracteriza por acumular el pigmento astaxantina. El objetivo de esta investigaci\u00f3n ha sido maximizar la producci\u00f3n de astaxantina en esta microalga. La estrategia a seguir es incrementar la productividad de biomasa y posteriormente definir las condiciones de estimulaci\u00f3n de la carotenogenesis.  para incrementar la producci\u00f3n de biomasa microalgal se realiz\u00f3 la optimizaci\u00f3n de los componentes del medio de cultivo, la intensidad de luz y la tasa de renovaci\u00f3n del cultivo en r\u00e9gimen simicontinuo.  la astaxantina es un pigmento del metabolismo secundario por lo cual la optimizaci\u00f3n de las condiciones de s\u00edntesis de este pigmento en las microalgas no puede realizarse al mismo tiempo que las condiciones de cultivo en r\u00e9gimen semicontinuo. Para la optimizaci\u00f3n de estas condiciones se realizaron posteriormente cultivos discontinuos de las microalgas.  la composici\u00f3n del medio de cultivo optimizado fue: kno3 0,41 g\/1, na2po4h 0,03g\/1, mgso4 7h2o 0,246 g\/6, cacl2 2h2o 0,11 g\/l, c6h5feo7 5h2o 2,62 mg\/l, cl2co 6h2o 0,011 mg\/l, so4cu 5h2o 0,012 mg\/l, cr2o3 0,075 mg\/l mncl2 4h2o 0.98 mg\/l, na2moo4 2h2o 0,12 mg\/l, seo2 0,005 mg\/l, biotina 25 mug\/l, tiamina 17,5 mug\/l y b12 15 mug\/l. A este cultivo se le ha designado como optimal haematococcus medium (ohm).
