Han sido detectados dos compuestos con propiedades de b-criptoxantina y zeaxantina, aunque el b-caroteno es el principal producto acumulado no es el producto final de la ruta.  han sido aislados cinco genes de la ruta de bios\u00edntesis de isoprenoides: cuatro de ellos (isoa, carg,carb, y carrp) controlan la producci\u00f3n de b-caronteno desde el precursor dimetilalil pirofosfato, y el quinto (isob) estaria implicado en la formacion de prenil pirofosfatos (prenilpp) de cadena media, precursores de las quinosas. Los genes carb y carrp estan estrechamente ligados, orientados en direcciones opuestas, y con una zona intergenica de 446 pb.  el gen isoa codifica una proteina deducida similar a farnesil pirofosfato sintasas tipo  i. La proteina deducida del gen isob es similar a prenilpp sintasas de cadena media.  el gen carg codifica una proteina con funcion geranilgeranil pirofosfato sintasa.  el car carb codifica la enzima fitoeno deshidrogenasa. En este gen estan alterados los mutantes carb.  el gen carrp constituye un nuevo tipo de gen implicado en cartenogenesis, bifuncional, que codifica una prote\u00edna con funciones licopeno ciclasa y fitoeno sintasa. La proteina carrp necesita la presencia de la proteina carb para obtener una elevada actividad licopeno ciclasa. En ete gen est\u00e1n alterados los mutantes carr, carp y carrp de m. Circinelloides. La funci\u00f3n licopeno ciclasa s\u00f3lo requiere la presencia del dominio amino terminal, la funci\u00f3n fitoeno sintasa es desempe\u00f1ada por el dominio carboxilo terminal, pero requiere la integridad estructural de toda la proteina.  los genes carg, carb y carrp son genes fotoinducibles por luz azul. existe un rapido incremento en la acumulaci\u00f3n de los trascritos respectivos tras
