Multiples evidencias indican que existen diferencias estructurales entre las mucinas producidas por celulas normales y tumorales.  los objetivos de este proyecto han sido: generar y caracterizar ac especificos de apomucinas; y 2) analizar la expresion de las apomucinas en tejido gastrointestinal normal y tumoral. Se ha generado un ac que reacciona con la mucina de cancer de colon deglicosilada y no con la forma nativa y que reconoce el epitopo pigt de la secuencia repetitiva de la apomucina muc2. El acmold010 reacciona con las celulas caliciformes del tracto gastrointestinal, preferentemente en el colon. Se ha analizado la expresion de apomucinas en el epitelio gastrointestinal. Mientras que muc1 y muc5 b se detectan en una amplia variedad de celulas epiteliales, muc2 y muc5c tienen una distribucion tisular mas restringida. En varios tipos celulares ha podido demostrarse la co-expresion de varias apomucinas. En tumores se han detectado 2 tipos de alteraciones: 1) perdida de la expresion de apomucinas detectables en el tejido normal; y expresion ectopica de apomucinas.
