El factor de iniciaci\u00f3n 2 (if2) es una prote\u00edan monom\u00e9rica que, unida a gtp, promueve la uni\u00f3n espec\u00edfica del fmet-trnaf al ribosoma durante la  formaci\u00f3n del complejo de iniciaci\u00f3n. If2 est\u00e1 expresado e ne. Coli en tres isoformas denomiadas if2a, if2b e if2y, todas ellas producto de la traducci\u00f3n secuencial del mismo gen, infb, con aparente id\u00e9ntica funcionalidad. este hecho junto con los resultados derivados de experimentos in vivo e in vitro con diversas formas mutantes de if2, han permitido concluir que los centros catal\u00edticos de if2 se encuentran localizados en los dos tercios c-terminales dejando por una parte el extremo n-terminal funcionalmente sin caracterizar y por otra, la funci\u00f3n de las diferentes formas de if2 inexplicada.  un modelo estructural en seis dominios para el if2a de e. Coli, es presentado en esta tesis basado en observaciones procedentes de estudios funcionales,p redicciones de estructura secundaria y un mapa de epitopos superficiales, creado mediante la caracterizaci\u00f3n de doce regiones en la superficie de la estructura de if2 reconocidas por diferentes anticuerpos monoclonales. con el fin de poder caracterizar funcionalmente los diferentes dominios de if2, hemos construido varios mutantes de deleci\u00f3n c-terminal y n-terminal, as\u00ed como dominios aislados que han sido incluidos en diversos ensayados con ribosomas in vitro. En esta tesis se presenta un modelo estructural de interacci\u00f3n entre if2 y el ribosoma en el que if2 es inicialmente reconocido por interacciones entre el extremo amino terminal y la subunidad ribosomal 30s estando adem\u00e1s if1 directamente involucrado. La consiguiente interacci\u00f3n con la subunidad 50s sucede a trav\u00e9s del extremo amino terminal de if2 as\u00ed como del dominio de uni\u00f3n nucleot\u00eddica.El modelo en su conjunto
