Aunque su uso en medicina se remonta al quinto milenio a c. El estudio cint\u00edfico entorno al cannabis no comenz\u00f3 hasta bien entrada la segunda mitad de este siglo. Hoy en d\u00eda est\u00e1 descrito que estos compuestos producen sus efectos a trav\u00e9s de receptores espec\u00edficos de la superfamilia de receptores con siete fragmentos transmembranares acoplados a prote\u00ednas g. La presente tesis doctoral se centra en el estudio del mecanismo de acci\u00f3n de los cannabinoides en c\u00e9lulas gliales. Estas c\u00e9lulas desempe\u00f1an funciones muy relevantes dentro del sistema nervioso, entre ellas la regulaci\u00f3n del metabolismo energ\u00e9tico cerebral.  en un primer cap\u00edtulo se describenlos efectos metab\u00f3licos de los cannabinoides y se analizan los posibles mecanismos responsables de tales efectos. Los resultados han llevado a concluir que la estimulaci\u00f3n metab\u00f3lica general que producen estos compuestos es debida a la generaci\u00f3n de ceramida y consiguiente activaci\u00f3n de la cascada erk\/mapk.  posteriormente se analizaron los posibles efectos apot\u00f3ticos de los cannabinoides in vitro demostraron que estos compuestos producen apoptosis, y no necrosis, en c\u00e9lulas de glioma.  este proceso parece ser consecuencia de un aumento sostenido en los niveles de ceramida, lo que a su vez produce una estimualci\u00f3n sostenida de la cascada erk\/mapk. Los estudios in vivo demuestran que los cannabinoides retrasan la muerte de los animales a los que se han inoculado c\u00e9lulas tumorales, y lo que resulta m\u00e1s interesante,un porcentaje
