El mecanismo m\u00e1s com\u00fan para explicar dicha ruptura es el denominado mecanismo de higgs, que postula la existencia de un escalar fundamental cuyo valor esperado de vacio rompe la simetria electrodebil. la inclusi\u00f3n de una particula escalar dentro de la teoria conlleva cierto tipo de problemas que se suelen arreglar al incluir supersimetria como una simetria de la naturaleza.  en esta memoria de tesis doctoral se ha abordado el tema de la ruptura electrodebil en teorias en las que el espacio-tiempo tiene una dimensi\u00f3n m\u00e1s. Dicha dimensi\u00f3n debe tener un tama\u00f1o tal que no entre en conflicto con las actuales medidas experimentales. En general se ha estudiado la generaci\u00f3n de vacios no triviales para el campo de higgs en modelos supersim\u00e9tricos con una dimensi\u00f3n extra a una escala de o(1 tev). Este tipo de modelos tiene la posibilidad de que parte de la materia este en cinco dimensiones mientras que otra parte pueda estar localizada en fronteras cuatrodimensionales de la dimensi\u00f3n extra.  debido a esta propiedad de que los campos puedan estar o no localizados existen dos posibilidades:  -el campo de higgs en cinco dimensiones.  -el campo de higgs localizado en una de las fronteras.  en ambos casos se han estudiado la ruptura eletrod\u00e9bil llegando al resultado de que es un fenomeno finito a diferencia lo que ocurre en las teor\u00edas en cuatro dimensiones.
