El carburo de silicio (sic), material cer\u00e1mico refractario capaz de conservar inalteradas sus buenas propiedades termomec\u00e1nicas hasta temperaturas superiores a los 1000 k, ha sido seleccionado desde hace tiempo como candidato para material estructural de la primera pared y envoltura de un reactor de fusi\u00f3n, por su comprobada baja activaci\u00f3n en entornos irradiados. Sin embargo, queda por ver si su respuesta a la irradiaci\u00f3n, en particular neutronica, es adecuada, esto es, si sus propiedades termomec\u00e1nicas se conservan de forma satisfactoria bajo irradiaci\u00f3n intensa y prolongada.  hoy en d\u00eda los expertos coinciden en sostener que un estudio de los efectos de la radiaci\u00f3n en los materiales que tenga como objetivo conseguir capacidad predictiva no puede prescindir de un entendimiento detallado de los multiples y complejos sucesos microscopicos que tienen lugar en el material irradiado. desgraciadamente, a traves de experimentos es muy dificil, si no imposible, obtener informaci\u00f3n directa sobre el estado de da\u00f1o producido por la radiaci\u00f3n, debido a la corta duraci\u00f3n de fen\u00f3menos como las cascadas de desplazamientos(pocos picosegundos) y a la min\u00fascula escala espacial abarcada por los defectos primarios (pocos nanometros).  las simulaciones atom\u00edsticas computacionales, gracias a la creciente capacidad de calculo ofrecida por las maquinas computadoras, constituyen en cambio una herramienta adecuada para esta tarea. En particular, la dinamica molecular (dm) es la tecnica computacional por excelencia para el estudio de la fase de producci\u00f3n de da\u00f1o.
