Algunas de estas bacterias poseen un sistema hidrogenasa capaz de mejorar la eficiencia energ\u00e9tica del sistema por oxidaci\u00f3n de este hidr\u00f3geno. en rhizobium leguminosarum bv. Viciae se han descrito 17 genes implicados en la sintesis de una hidrogenasa [feni] activa. Estos genes (humslcdefghijkhypabcde) se localizan en una regi\u00f3n de aproximadamente 17 kb del plasmido simbi\u00f3tico. en esta tesis hemos secuenciado un fragmento de adn de 2,8 kb adyacente a hype. El analisis de la secuencia ha determinado la presencia de un gen funcional, hypx, y de restos de un gen no funcional hom\u00f3logo a hoxa(whoxa). los datos obtenidos del analisis de la secuencia y de la caracterizaci\u00f3n fenot\u00edpica de inserciones tn5 en el gen hypx implican a la prote\u00edna hypx en el procesamiento de la hidrogenasa, posiblemente mediante la incorporaci\u00f3n de grupos c1 a su centro activo. La ausencia de un gen hoxa funcional y de otros genes reguladores implicados en la expresi\u00f3n de la actividad hidrogenasa en vida libre (hupuv) sugieren la perdida de los genes reguladores de la actividad hidrogenasa en vida libre, en un proceso de adaptaci\u00f3n a la simbiosis y coordinaci\u00f3n de la expresi\u00f3n de los sistemas hidrogenasa y nitrogenasa en r. Leguminosarum. Bv. Viciae.  por otra parte se ha investigado la presencia del sistema hidrogenasa en poblaciones nativas de r. Leguminosarum de la peninsula iberica. No se ha encontrado ninguna cepa hidrogenasa positivo en 112 aislamientos de suelos de diferentes localizaciones, lo que sugiere que este es un car\u00e1cter raro. Asi mismo se ha estudiado la conservaci\u00f3nde los genes de la hidrogenasa en cepas de r. Leguminosarum bv.
