Tambi\u00e9n se estudian alternativas al proceso de nitrificaci\u00f3n\/desnitrificaci\u00f3n tradicional para el tratamiento de dichas aguas.  en el primer cap\u00edtulo se trata el problema de la contaminaci\u00f3n producida por los compuestos nitrogenados, as\u00ed como su tratamiento mediante procesos de nitrificaci\u00f3n\/desnitrificaci\u00f3n. Tambi\u00e9n se describen nuevos conceptos para la combinaci\u00f3n ambos procesos, profundizando especialmente en el proceso anammox.  en el segundo cap\u00edtulo se describe la metodolog\u00eda empleada para la determinaci\u00f3n de los distintos par\u00e1metros medicos, as\u00ed como los sistemas usaos para la determinaci\u00f3n de la actividad de la biomasa.  en el tercer cap\u00edtulo se estudia el proceso de nitrificaci\u00f3n en unidades de lodos activos. Se desarrollan unidades capaces de tratar altas velocidades de carga amoniacal(7,7 kgn-nh 4+\/m3) con altas concentraciones de biomasa(15 g ssv\/l). Tambi\u00e9n se estudia la estabilidad de este tipo de unidades frente a sobrecarcas debidas a fluctuaciones de caudal o concentraci\u00f3n en el influente, choques de ph y niveles de ox\u00edgeno bajos. Se comprob\u00f3 que la adici\u00f3n de caol\u00edn era beneficiosa causando un incremento en la actividad nitrificante (hasta 1,1 gn-nh4+gssv-d y 1,6 gn-no2-\/gssv-d). Por otra parte, se estudi\u00f3 el efecto de dos antibi\u00f3ticos (oxitetraciclina y cloranfenicol) sobre la nitrificaci\u00f3n y la estabilidad del reactor.  en el cuarto cap\u00edtulo se emplea un reactor airlift de biopel\u00edcula para estudiar la producci\u00f3n de \u00f3xido nitroso durante la nitrificaci\u00f3n y las condiciones que la favorecen(acumulaciones de nitrito, presencia de materia org\u00e1nica y niveles bajos de nitr\u00f3geno).
