La contribucion coherente resulta un orden de magnitud mas grande que la secuencial.  existiendo un buen acuerdo entre teoria y experimentos.  tambien se ha estudiado el tunel fotoasistido cuando se aplica un campo magnetico paralelo a la corriente. El efecto de la luz se puede controlar convenientemente ajustando la relacion entre las dos frecuencias:  ciclotron y luz. Se ha estudiado tambien el efecto de la luz cuando la polarizacion es circular. El resultado es una disminucion del efecto de la luz transversal. Tambien se ha estudiado el efecto de la luz sobre la biestabilidad de una doble barrera resultando en una disminucion de la principal zona de biestabilidad y en la aparicion de nuevas zonas de biestabilidad. Tambien se ha estudiado el efecto de un campo alterno sobre la corriente tunel en una superred. El efecto consiste en la aparicion de fotosatelites inducidos que dan lugar a estructuras adicionales a la corriente.
