Algunas proteinas recombinantes sobreproducidas no se secretan eficazmente, acumulandose en el citoplasma.  esto puede ser debido a que algun elemento de la ruta de secrecion se convierte en limitante. Esto se podria evitar proporcionando a la bacteria copias adicionales de los genes implicados en el proceso de secrecion de proteinas. Se han suplementado cepas de e. Coli con copias de estos genes, y como resultado se ha mejorado la produccion periplasmica de dos proteinas recombinantes:  a) se ha mejorado la secrecion de la interleukina 6 humana incidiendo en el paso de la translocacion de la proteina a traves de la membrana citoplasmica con ayuda de los genes pr1a4 y sece.  b) la mejora de la secrecion del factor estimulador de colonias granulociticas humano
