La deteccion inmunohistoquimica del canal, muestra que es expresado en muy diversos lugares dentro del sistema nervioso y de los musculos, lo que sugiere que asume multiples funciones. Mediante western-blot se ha determinado que la variedad de isoformas producida a partir del gen es utilizada de forma diferencial dependiendo de la localizacion anatomica y del estadio de desarrollo. La cuantificacion de las cantidades de canal shaker expresadas en mutantes hiperexcitables han mostrado que existe un sistema que modula estas cantidades en funcion de la excitabilidad celular
