La investigaci\u00f3n se estructura en dos estudios te\u00f3ricos y un estudio emp\u00edrico.  el primer estudio te\u00f3rico (cap\u00edtulo 3) incluye entre sus principales hallazgos:  1,- un estudio matem\u00e1tico y escolar del sistema de n\u00fameros reales organizado en cinco \u00e1mbitos: orden, tipo de n\u00famero, fenomenolog\u00eda, representaciones y operaciones (surgidos del estudio de respuestas de estudiantes de secundaria a un custionario piloto).  2,- un estudio de la representaci\u00f3n de n\u00fameros reales en la recta desde los puntos de vista epistemol\u00f3gico, fenomenol\u00f3gico y cognitivo.  el estudio emp\u00edrico consiste en la detecci\u00f3n y caracterizaci\u00f3n de dos conflictos cognitivos en estudiantes de bachillerato y 1\u00c2\u00ba de licenciatura de matem\u00e1ticas, mediante entrevistas exploratorias (cap\u00edtulo 4), un cuestionario (cap\u00edtulos 5 y 6) y entrevistas confirmatorias (cap\u00edtulo 6). El primer conflicto consiste en la dificultad para aceptar que a un n\u00famero constructible cuya escritura decimal es infinita le corresponda un punto determinado sobre la recta. El segundo conflicto consiste en la falta de distinci\u00f3n entre dos nociones de representaci\u00f3n gr\u00e1fica: objeto geom\u00e9trico (punto) y objeto f\u00edsico (marca).  el segundo estudio
