Es muy importante poder determinar los niveles de sustancias contaminantes, que aun existiendo en peque\u00f1a concentracion, pueden ser perjudiciales tanto para el hombre como para el medio ambiente. es el caso de los metales pesados, que son muy toxicos a pesar de encontrarse a nivel de trazas. Para su determinacion se exigen tecnicas con bajos limites de deteccion y buena sensibilidad.  el objetivo del trabajo de investigacion es la determinacion de metales, principalmente metales pesados, mediante la tecica de potenciometria de redisolucion en un sistema automatico de flujo continuo con una celda construida en el laboratorio, la cual ha sido patentada (u 9902215). El trabajo se centra en la determinacion de cin, cadmio, plomo, cobre, niquel, cobalto y cromo en el agua del rio arlazon, aunque tambien se amplia la tecnica a otros medios.
