El an\u00e1lisis de estos datos llev\u00f3 a la conclusi\u00f3n de que estos receptores est\u00e1n localizados presin\u00e1pticamente.  al determinar el mecanismo de acci\u00f3n mediante el cual la acci\u00f3n descrita se llev\u00f3 a cabo, se encontr\u00f3 que para la misma era necesaria la activaci\u00f3n de una prote\u00edna g sensible a toxina pert\u00fasica y la posterior activaci\u00f3n de una prote\u00edna quinasa c, la cual fosforilar\u00eda alg\u00fan sustrato cuya activaci\u00f3n producir\u00eda una disminuci\u00f3n de la liberaci\u00f3n de gaba. Kainato tambi\u00e9n depolariza las interneuronas inhibidoras haciendo que estas disparen de forma repetitiva. ambos efectos, la depolarizaci\u00f3n de la membrana y la reducci\u00f3n de las corrientes inhibidoras pueden ser disociados de diferentes formas, entre ellas, por el efecto de glutamanto, agonista natural de los receptores de kainato. estos resultados indican que las interneuronas de hipocampo contienen dos poblaciones de receptores de kainato, cada una con diferente sensibilidad agonistas y acopladas a rutas de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n diferentes.  el efecto de kainato de deprimir la transmisi\u00f3n inhibidora es un efecto que adem\u00e1s de en hipocampo se observa en otras rutas y regiones del cerebro, entre ellas, la regi\u00f3n ca3 de hipocampo, en la capa de las neuronas de purkinje y en las c\u00e9lulas de los n\u00facleos profundos, ambas del cerebelo y tambi\u00e9n en las neuronas de la capa v de corteza, pudiendo se \u00e9ste, un fen\u00f3meno
