El gran inter\u00e9s que surge se basa fundamentalmente en la posibilidad de desarrollar dispositivos optoelectr\u00f3nicos basados en la tecnolog\u00eda de si. Dado el caracter relativamente estrecho e indirecto de la banda prohibida del si, su aplicaci\u00f3n a dispositivos optoelectr\u00f3nicos es muy limitada. No obstante, desde el descubrimiento de la intensa luminiscencia del si poroso y de las nanopart\u00edculas de si crecidas en matrices amorfas se ha abierto la posibilidad de la realizaci\u00f3n de dispositivos electroluminiscentes basados en este tipo de estructuras. en 1990 se descubre la emisi\u00f3n de luz en el espectro visible por parte del silicio poroso, silicio que ha sufrido un ataque electroqu\u00edmico en una soluci\u00f3n de hf. La realizaci\u00f3n de este ataque controlado hace que se formen peque\u00f1os agregados nanom\u00e9tricos, cosa que produce una abertura del gap y favorece las recombinaciones radiativas. Posteriormente se ha sintetizado nanocristales de si en si02 mediante t\u00e9cnicas como la implantaci\u00f3n i\u00f3nica.La intensa emisi\u00f3n de luz proveniente de nanocristales de si ha sido fuente de numerosos estuidos e investigaciones. Como contrapunto a los materiales porosos, los materiales embebidos en matrices amorfas presentan importantes ventajas en determinadas aplicaciones, sobre todo en las electr\u00f3nicas y optoelectr\u00f3nicas.
