Hasta el momento se ha aislado principalmente de anguilas enfermas, pero hay tambi\u00e9n algunos aislamientos cl\u00ednicos y ambientales. La hip\u00f3tesis de partida de esta tesis es que el reservorio de esta bacteria debe ser el ecosistema acu\u00e1tico, encontr\u00e1ndose no s\u00f3lo en las anguilas sino tambi\u00e9n en el agua, el sedimento y los moluscos filtradores. As\u00ed pues, el objetivo principal fue analizar las estrategias de supervivencia de v. Vulnificus serovar e. Dentro y fuera de su hospedador natural, la anguila.  de resultados obtenidos se derivan varias conclusiones. Esta bacteria sobrevive dentro de la anguila porque resiste la acci\u00f3n bactericida del complemento del suero, siendo responsable de dicha resistencia la cadena lateral o del lipopolisac\u00e1rido caracter\u00edstico del serovar. Fuera de la anguila, el pat\u00f3geno adopta estrategias de supervivencia caracter\u00edsticas de las bacterias acu\u00e1ticas. Asi, es capaz de sobrevivir durante largos per\u00edodos sin nutrientes, y mantiene esas condiciones su potencial virulento tanto para la anguila como para el ser humano. El rango de salinidades y temperaturas a las que puede sobrevivir es amplio, abarcando desde salinidades del 0,3% hasta las t\u00edpicas del agua de mar, 3,8% y temperaturas de entre 12 y 30\u00c2\u00bac, es decir, que puede sobrevivir en aguas estuarinas y marinas en las diferentes \u00e9pocas del a\u00f1o. A temperaturas bajas (5\u00c2\u00bac) o en ausencia de sales adopta el llamado estado viable no cultivable, perdiendo la cultivabilidad en medio s\u00f3lido pero reteniendo la actividad metab\u00f3lica, cuando la temperatura asciende la bacteria revierte al estado cultivable, a trav\u00e9s de lo que puede ser un proceso de \u00abresucitaci\u00f3n\u00bb o a trav\u00e9s del recrecimiento de unas pocas c\u00e9lulas cultivables no detectadas previamente.
