Tomando como punto de partida su posicion en los debates sobre el positivismo en el ateneo que analiza en el cap. I realiza un estudio critico y pormenorizado de la vision que azcarate tiene de la sociedad -el problema social- de su tiempo desde su puesto en la comision de reformas sociales. Para el pensador krausista este estudio, que oscila entre la historia y la filosofia, es imprescindible para construir una sociedad mas libre y mas justa. Adquiere asi una dimension practica que se concreta en el desarrollo de la sociolog\u00eda, analizado en el cap. Iii y en su pensamiento politico con propuestas a favor del regimen parlamentario y la libre asociacion de los obreros tal como se estudia en el cap. Iv. El cap.  final se dedica al problema religioso que abarco toda la reflexion de los hombres de 1868.
