El trabajo consta de dos partes. En la primera parte se realiza una revisi\u00f3n te\u00f3rica del estado actual del s\u00edndrome, destacando el importe papel que ejercen algunas variables de personalidad y conductas de afrontamiento, y tambien la repercusi\u00f3n del sb etre los cuidadores formales de ancianos. la segunda parte describe el estudio empirico realizado en torno a una muestra de 411 cuidadores formales pertenecientes a diversas residencias geriatricas espa\u00f1olas, que contestaron a los siguientes cuestionarios de autoinforme: sociodemografico, maslach burnout inventory o mbi (maslach y jackson, 1986), bateria de escalas de expectativas generalizadas decontrol o beegc-20 (palenzuela, rodriguez, barros, prieto y almeida, 1997) y ways of coping questionaire\/wcq (lazarus y folkman, 1988). Los resultados revelan la existencia de un porcentaje del 32% de sb en la muestra examinada. En t\u00e9rminos generales puede concluirse que las variables psicol\u00f3gicas intervinientes y las estrategias de afrontamiento permiten explicar las diferencias de quienes muestran altos indices de sb con respecto a las personas que no sufren el sindrome. De esta manera, los cuidadores con sb se creen menos eficaces, perciben como incontralables los acontecimientos y, por consiguiente, no esperan conseguir lo que desean asimismo, se caracterizan po un mayor uso del \u00abdesahogo emocional\u00bb, y por un menor empleo del \u00abremodelamiento constructivo\u00bb.  palabras clave.
