Como se sabe, la conversion del nitrogeno amoniacal en nitrito y\/o nitratos (nitrificacion) es el primer paso necesario, para posteriormente, en un proceso denominado desnitrificacion ser reducidos a nitrogeno. En condiciones an\u00f3xicas, el nitrito y nitrato actuan como oxidantes de materia organica reduciendose a nitrogeno que se evapora del agua residual.  para realizar una adecuada comparacion entre los tres reactores estudiados se ha empleado un agua sintetica.  los reactores estudiados han sido: un reactor de mezcla completa con recirculacion de lodos; un reactor air-lift con recirculacion de lodos y un reactor de lecho fijo relleno con monturas berl.
