Para ello el autor ha utilizado datos reales de operacion de tres depuradoras (manresa, gava y arroyo de la vega) y ha aplicado tres modelos empiricos (smith, voshel y tebbutt).  el modelo smith se ha demostrado inadecuado, ya que en el el rendimiento solo es funcion de la carga hidraulica. Los modelos de voshel y tebbutt, rendimiento en funcion de la carga hidraulica y de las concentraciones iniciales de solidos en suspension y db05, presentan mejores resultados, pero con una importante dispersion entre los datos observados y los datos calculados por el modelo.  el autor de esta tesis propone modificar los modelos empiricos con la inclusion de una tercera variable dependiente, en este caso la temperatura del agua residual en el clarificador primario.
