Durante mucho tiempo, en espa\u00f1a, el serogrupo b ha sido el mayoritario, fundamentalmente en la d\u00e9cada de los 70 y de los 80. Sin embargo, a comienzos de 1990 empez\u00f3 a registrarse un tendencia ascendente de serogrupo c, originando durante el periodo 95-97 la aparici\u00f3n de una nueva onda epid\u00e9mica. La expresi\u00f3n antig\u00e9nica asociada correspond\u00eda a la combinaci\u00f3n fenot\u00edpica c:2b:p1.2,5, habiendo reemplazado a la antigua cepa epid\u00e9mica de serogrupo c, c:2b:nst. Su aparici\u00f3n nos llev\u00f3 a realizar un estudio del conjunto de cepas c:2b:p1.2,5 aplicando diferentes marcadores de naturaleza molecular tales como la electroforesis en cambo pulsado o pfge, que nos permitia analizar la totalidad del adn cromos\u00f3mico mediante aplicaci\u00f3n de enzimas de restricci\u00f3n de baja frecuencia de corte y multi locus sequence typing o mlst basado en la amplificaci\u00f3n y posterior secuenciaci\u00f3n de 7 genes housekeeping de meningococo. El an\u00e1lisis refleja la existencia de una estructura poblacional muy homogenea y su pertenencia al clustr poblacional a4. Hasta este momento, se describ\u00eda que la antigua cepa epidemica circulante de serogrupo c, la cepa c:2b:nst, pertencia al cluster poblacionasl et-37, sin embargo, un analisis m\u00e1s detallado, por pfge y mlst, del conjunto de cepas pertenecientes al periodo 92-99, expresando dicha combinaci\u00f3n antig\u00e9nica, apunta un hecho de vital importancia para el conocimiento de la epidemiolog\u00eda de meningococo entre la poblaci\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola y que explicaria la aparici\u00f3n de la onda epid\u00e9mica iniciada en el a\u00f1o 95.
