En principio, esta falta temporal de balance no tendr\u00eda por qu\u00e9 implicar un fuerte impacto en los ciclos biogeoqu\u00edmicos del oceano, en especial sobre aquellos que controlan los flujos verticales de carbono. El exceso de producci\u00f3n primaria podr\u00eda volver al medio como materia inorg\u00e1nica (por procesos de respiraci\u00f3n, degradaci\u00f3n o consumo) dentro de la capa de mezcla, sin que ocurriese un incremento notable de material exportado. El proceso de agregaci\u00f3n cambia dr\u00e1sticamente este escenario porque empaqueta este exceso de producci\u00f3n primaria en part\u00edculas de gran tama\u00f1o que sedimentan a gran velocidad y abandonan la capa de mezcla en poco tiempo. La acumulaci\u00f3n de part\u00edculas exopolim\u00e9ricas transparentes (teps) en las \u00faltimas fases d sucesi\u00f3n y su persitencia en zonas oligotr\u00f3ficas como la estaci\u00f3n aloha s\u00ed que permiten pensar en la posibilidad de un acoplamiento entre la producci\u00f3n primaria que se deriva a esta sustancia durante un bloom y la producci\u00f3n secundaria, con tal que el zooplancton pueda hacer uso de la energ\u00eda quimica contenida en ella. Al menos para el caso de cop\u00e9podos, esta posibilidad queda descartada ya que, aunque alteran la estructura de tama\u00f1os de los teps, no obtienen ningun beneficio energ\u00e9tico de ellos. no obstante, la alteraci\u00f3n de tama\u00f1os que dan lugar, incrementa potencialmente el proceso de agregaci\u00f3n sucede a una velocidad muy inferior a la prevista por los modelos teoricos. La nitidez con que la escala temporal del proceso ha sido caracterizada es consecuencia del sistema de adquisici\u00f3n y analisis de imagen con el que se ha conseguido realizar el seguimiento de los blooms de fitoplancton.
