El hecho de necesitar intensidades opticas elevadas lleva a utilizar estructuras guiantes que confinen el haz de luz.  las principales aportaciones de la presente tesis son:  &#8211; la presentacion de una tecnica diagramatica que simplifica tremendamente el analisis de guias opticas no lineales planas. El resultado de esta tecnica son unos pocos diagramas (diagramas v-b), que permiten resumir toda la informacion relevante referente a las ondas guiadas estacionarias y su estabilidad.  &#8211; el estudio por primera vez del efecto combinado de medios anisotropos birrefringentes y materiales no lineales isotropos en guias opticas planas para su uso como dispositivos de conmutacion totalmente opticos. Se estudian los tipos de ondas estacionarias que estas guias pueden soportar (ondas hibridas). Como principal aplicacion se propone un un nuevo tipo de dispositivo de umbral de potencia, cuya se\u00f1al de umbral es sintonizable con la direccion de propagacion de la luz respecto al eje optico
