Se ha estudiado su aplicaci\u00f3n en elm\u00e9todo del reemplazo molecular. Una funci\u00f3n buscadora de im\u00e1genes puede utilizarse como un criterio de ajuste entre el mapa de patterson del cristal y un conjunto de vectores obtenido de un mapa de patterson calculado  a partir del modelo. Se ha jobservado que existe una fuerte dependencia entre el comportamiento de las funciones buscadoras de im\u00e1genes y los valores de ciertos par\u00e1metros estad\u00edsticos de ambos mapas.  se ha establecido un algoritmo que permite obtener eficazmente el conjunto apropiado de bectores del modelo.
