Se analiza el papel de la lovastatina, un inhibidor competitivo de la hidroxi-metil glutaril coenzima a reductasa (hmg-coa reductasa), sobre el crecimiento celular. Los resultados muestran que la lovastatina inhibe el crecimiento celular induciendo la meurte por apoptosis. Esto se demuestra mediante estudios morfol\u00f3gicos, an\u00e1lisis de la aneuploid\u00eda mediante citometr\u00eda de flujo, patr\u00f3n de electroforesis de dna en escalera y tinci\u00f3n nuclear.  se analiza adem\u00e1s, el mecanismo por el cual pudiera estar actuando la lovastatina y mediante an\u00e1lisis de la farnesilaci\u00f3n y geranilgeranilaci\u00f3n de diferentes prote\u00ednas de la cascada de transducci\u00f3n, se llega a la conclusi\u00f3n de que la lovastatina inhibe la prenilaci\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna ras y de la prote\u00edna rho a. La inhibici\u00f3n de estas prote\u00ednas conduce a la inactivaci\u00f3n de rutas implicadas en la proliferaci\u00f3n celular, como la de erk kinasa y la activaci\u00f3n de cascadas que conducen a la muerte celular, como la de jnks. Esto se comprueba mediante la valoraci\u00f3n de los niveles de fosforilaci\u00f3n de las prote\u00ednas implicadas.  el efecto de la lovastatina es prevenido por el mevalonato y no lo es por otros
