La estirpe comensal escherichia coli k-12 ha sido considerada tradicionalmente como no hemol\u00edtica. sin embargo, la hiperproducci\u00f3n en e. Coli k-12 de varios reguladores transcripcioinales provoca la aparici\u00f3n de un fenotipo hemol\u00edtico que no se expresa en las condiciones habituales de cultivo. En este trabajo se ha clonado un nuevo gen cromos\u00f3mico de e.Coli k-12, shea, cuyo producto presenta actividad hemol\u00edtica por s\u00ed mismo. El polipeptido shea carece de p\u00e9ptido se\u00f1al y de otras se\u00f1ales conocidas para la secreci\u00f3n, a pesar de lo cual es exportado de shea es independiente de su actividad hemol\u00edtica y es acompa\u00f1ada por la liberaci\u00f3n transitoria al medio de componenetes peripl\u00e1smicos, sin que se detecte lisis o perdida de viabilidad de las celulas productoras. La hemolisina shea no presenta similitudes con otras toxinas citoliticas, siendo el prototipo de una nueva familia de citolisinas. Existen genes homologos de shea en varias enterobacterias patogenas, de los cuales hemos clonado y caracterizado los correspondientes a e.Coli o157:h7 y shigella
