El proceso de esporulacion en la levadura saccharomyces cerevisiae implica un programa regulado de desarrollo celular que conduce a la encapsulacion de nucleos haploides en el interior de ascosporas con paredes celulares de multiples capas que confieren una mayor protecci\u00f3n frente a condiciones de estr\u00e9s, comparado con la pared celular vegetativa.  swm1 se expresa debilmente durante el crecimiento vegetativo pero se induce fuertemente en condiciones de esporulaci\u00f3n, con una cin\u00e9tica similar a la de los genes medios especificos de esporulaci\u00f3n. Diploides homozig\u00f3ticos swml realizan normalmente las dos divisiones mei\u00f3ticas pero no son capaces de formar ascas maduras. La deleci\u00f3n de sem1 afecta especificamente a la expresi\u00f3n de genes tardios y muy tardios de esporulaci\u00f3n, como ssg1, dit1 o sps100 por lo que estos mutantes poseen defectos en la sintesis y ensamplaje de la pare celular de la espora. La proteina nuclear swm1p participa, junto con la ruta de mapks especifica de esporulacion en la correcta inducci\u00f3n y regulacion temporal de los genes tardios y muy tardios de esporulacion, desempe\u00f1ando un papel independiente de dicha ruta.  las c\u00e9lulas carentes del gen swm1 se lisan cuando crecen a elevadas temperaturas (37\u00c2\u00bac), defecto que se recupera en presencia de sorbitol. las celulas mutantes presentan defectos en citoquinesis y poseen un exceso de quitina en los tabiques, estando extremadamente engrosados en algunos casos, y en las paredes celulares, donde se observan acumulos deslocalizados. mediante analisis de transcripci\u00f3n utilizando membranas \u00abmicroarrays\u00bb se ha comprobado que la deleci\u00f3n de swm1 afecta a la expresi\u00f3n
